The Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club is very active and visible in our community. We strive to make Hawai`i a better place.
We do this by collaborating with organizations in our community such as Hawai`i Maoli, DHHL, Friends of the Royal Hawaiian Band, Lunalilo Home, Loko Ea Fishpond, Hawai`i Youth Opera Chorus, Aloha Festivals, Kawaiaha`o Church, and Aha Moku Council, among many other organizations.
Our participation in cultural activities include the King Kamehameha Hula Competition, providing flowers for Historic Washington Place, Onipa`a Celebration at Iolani Palace for Queen Lili`uokalani’s Birthday, singing in the Ecumenical Choir for Onipa`a; participating in the Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole Celebration, providing Hawaiian craft demonstrations at conventions held in Hawai’i, attending Ali`i Sunday celebrations at Kawaiaha`o Church, and intimate involvement with the Aloha Festivals Investiture. Other community events the club has participated in include the Great Aloha Run, the Hawai`i Fishing Festival, the Pearlridge Christmas and Dinosaur Safari Train, the Diabetes Walk, and the community blood drives with the Blood Bank of Hawai`i.
Our club meets monthly and has an average attendance of 35-40 people. Each meeting has a theme and is addressed via guest speakers, cultural practioners, or informational trivia games that help to educate our membership on Hawaiian history, culture, and current events. We have guest speakers, including Lt. Governor Duke Aiona, Senator Colleen Hanabusa, Hamilton McCubbin, Ph.D., and members of Halau Kukunaokala, among others. We hold meetings in the mauka region of the club ahupua`a; Keaiwa Heiau (Aiea Loop trail), and we participate in the Makahiki at Pu`uloa, located in the makai region of our ahupua`a.
True to Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaoles’ motto: “E paepae I Luna Loa I Ka Malamalama”, Hold High the Light of Knowledge, the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club awarded 18 scholarships to deserving members pursuing their post-high school education for the year 2010.
The Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club seeks to communicate to our members and the public at-large through this media of the present, and we continue to perpetuate and rely on the knowledge of our kupuna, as we empower and shape the future generation for our Hawai’i.
